The university community is invited to recognize all UT police officers and peace officers throughout the country, at a flag lowering ceremony to be held at 9 a.m. Monday, May 15, at the flag poles at the entrance of the university. All are encouraged to honor and show their appreciation for the university’s police officers by taking part in “Peace Officer’s Memorial Day.”

“Peace Officer’s Memorial Day” is always on May 15 and is one of the feature activities that take place during National Police Week. This year National Police Week is May 14-22.

The 30-minute ceremony will be presented by Lt. Alfredo Cooke, university police, and will include an opening prayer, salute and the lowering of the flags. It will conclude with the playing of bagpipes followed by a prayer.

Cpl. Karen Tucker, university police, said there will be a display of all university officers in the nation who died. Blue ribbons will be given to individuals to wear throughout the week.

“This memorial is conducted all over the United States during National Police Week,” she said. “We encourage everyone to come out and support police officers.”

The Regional Academic Health Center in Harlingen will hold a service at noon in the courtyard. Children from Treasure Hills Elementary have been invited to sing the Pledge of Allegiance. For more information, please contact Lt. Adam Treviño, university police: TrevinoA3@uthscsa.edu. The Laredo Campus Extension will be handing out blue ribbons to faculty, staff and students, and will also hold a ceremony in honor of peace officers throughout the country. For more information, please contact Cpl. Gabe Garcia: GarciaG4@uthscsa.edu.

More than 17,400 law enforcement officers have been killed in America since 1792. In 2004, one law enforcement officer was killed every 2.3 days, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page, Inc. For more information, visit www.odmp.org/.
