Saving the City of San Antonio approximately 86 million gallons of water per year, the Health Science Center is the recipient of the city’s WaterSaver Award! The Health Science Center joins only a handful of local entities recognized by the San Antonio Water System (SAWS).

“By installing the recycled water line, we’ve been able to save millions of gallons of water,” said Darrell Maatsch, director of facilities management. “It also helps the Health Science Center to save hundreds of thousands of dollars each year.”

The installation process of the Health Science Center’s recycled water line began about a year ago, connecting the campus to the SAWS recycled water line that was installed three years ago on Floyd Curl. It is used as part of the irrigation system on central campus, and in cooling towers at the central and north campuses. The $275,000 project was paid for by SAWS.

The water line runs underground from the corner of Louis Pasteur and Floyd Curl to cooling towers at the central energy plant. The cooling towers have the ability to process up to 50,000 gallons of water per minute. Purple sprinkler heads on campus serve as a warning that the water from them is not drinkable.

Maatsch will represent the Health Science Center when it and six other local entities are honored at a breakfast next month. The WaterSaver awards are sponsored by the San Antonio Business Journal, KENS-5 and KTSA Talk Radio.
