Faculty, staff, students and residents of the family and community medicine department at the Health Science Center will gather at the University Health Center Downtown June 21 to present community health projects to their colleagues and members of the community. It’s all part of “Family Physicians in Community Day,” which has become a tradition in the department of family and community medicine.
The annual event, which began about four years ago, involves team presentations of the residency program’s community health promotion projects. This year’s projects include:
• Youth Development Project: Adolescent health and health careers promotion among economically disadvantaged middle and high school students in San Antonio and surrounding areas
• Parent-Child Health Project: Health education and promotion for teen parents in a Southside alternative school
• Community Health Education and Promotion Project: Focuses on adults in a medically underserved area of Southwest San Antonio
• Alpha Home-SAMM Project: Free student-run clinics serving women in a residential substance abuse recovery program and homeless families in a transitional living facility.
Community-Oriented Primary Care (COPC) projects have been going for several years and involve the collective talent of family medicine residents, teaching physicians, and non-M.D. faculty. Community projects are key to practicing quality community-oriented health care. The event also gives team members the opportunity to recognize and thank the many community partners who have played a strong role in the success of the projects.
COPC day begins at 1 p.m. Janna Lesser, R.N., Ph.D., assistant professor of family nursing at the Health Science Center, will be the featured speaker beginning at 1:15 p.m.
