Teaching
Excellence
Course (UTEC) will begin this month. Registration is available through the division of educational research and development of the academic informatics services department.
UTEC is open to Health Science Center faculty, fellows, residents and staff with teaching responsibilities.
This 28-hour professional development program has become a tradition at the Health Science Center. Since 1976, about 1,000 faculty, fellows and residents have completed UTEC. The 2006 UTEC will be conducted Tuesdays from 4 to 6 p.m., Aug. 22 through Nov. 14.
UTEC is conducted in workshop format to allow participants hands-on practice with key teacher tasks including the following:
• evaluating students,
• writing tests,
• teaching effectively in the classroom,
• planning courses,
• teaching psychomotor skills,
• providing feedback,
• intervening with students who are difficult and
• Web-based learning.
Participants also explore cognitive theories and research, review educational best practices and complete teaching self-assessment exercises.
