P. Renee Yew, Ph.D., assistant professor at the Institute of Biotechnology, was appointed to a peer-review committee of the American Heart Association (AHA), Western Review Consortium. The consortium is a collaborative effort between the AHA’s Texas and Western States Affiliates.
The peer review committees of the AHA provide a critical review of research applications according to established AHA standards. As a part of the committee, Dr. Yew is responsible for the scientific evaluation of proposals to research programs.
Dr. Yew was selected based on her accomplishments as an independent investigator and her ability to evaluate scientific proposals.
Participation in the AHA peer-review committees is vital to the AHA’s research program, which is dependent upon the volunteer contributions of leading scientists across the nation. The recommendations of the committees form the basis for the allocation of research awards.
Dr. Yew joined the Health Science Center in 1998 and studies the regulators that are involved in different stages of the cell cycle. Her research is critical to determining how and why cells lose normal controls. The understanding could help identify new drugs or develop novel therapies to fight cancer.
