The Fourth Annual Frank Bryant Jr., M.D., Memorial Lecture in Medical Ethics will take place at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 17, in Room 3.102 at the Health Science Center. Kenneth Shine, M.D., executive vice chancellor for health affairs at The University of Texas System, will present “Code Red: The Next Steps.”
Health Science Center President Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., and School of Medicine Dean William L. Henrich, M.D., invite all to attend.
Code Red: The Critical Condition of Health in Texas is the result of an 18-month study by a task force organized to address issues of access to health care and health insurance in Texas. Since Texas has the highest rate of uninsured people in the nation, the report’s findings are already having a considerable impact as state leadership deals with the impending crisis.
Following Dr. Shine’s presentation, Dianna Burns, M.D., chairman of the Bexar County Medical Society; George Hernandez Jr., president and CEO of University Health System; John Hornbeak, president and CEO of Methodist Healthcare System; and Kevin Moriarty, CEO of Methodist Healthcare Ministries, will comment on Code Red and its implications.
The Frank Bryant Jr., M.D., Memorial Lecture in Medical Ethics kicked off in 2002 in honor of Dr. Bryant. He was the co-founder and first medical director of the Ella Austin Clinic and was co-developer of the East San Antonio Medical Center. Dr. Bryant received many honors and awards, including the Bexar County Medical Society Foundation Award, given to an individual who has promoted excellence in the San Antonio medical community, dedicated time to volunteer efforts and provided leadership within the community.
Dr. Shine is responsible for the six UT System health institutions. A cardiologist and physiologist, he is the former president of the Institute of Medicine.
The lecture is sponsored by the Center for Medical Humanities and Ethics, and Fulbright & Jaworski, L.L.P.
