Health Science Center Vice President for Research Brian Herman, Ph.D., will host the sixth in a series of Town Hall meetings initiated to provide discussion about issues pertaining to the research enterprise of the Health Science Center. This meeting will be held from 4 to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 12, in Room 309L.

The meeting will provide an overview and organizational structure of the new Institute for Integration of Medicine and Science (I2MS), introduced by the Clinical and Translational Science Award Program. The I2MS will be instrumental in translating bench science to bedside care to best practices in South Texas.

Robert A. Clark, M.D., assistant vice president for clinical research and director of the I2MS, will discuss the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) roadmap initiative to catalyze the development of a new discipline of clinical and translational science. The NIH strongly encourages partnerships with other clinically related institutions and clinical research entities.

“The overall goal of the I2MS is to develop a stimulating and interactive environment that will transform the way clinical and translational research is done here at the Health Science Center and in collaboration with our partner institutions and community organizations,” Dr. Clark said. “Since very broad interdisciplinary approaches will be featured, it is vitally important that all of our faculty and staff are well informed about this initiative.”

All faculty and staff are encouraged to attend the meetings, and topic suggestions are welcome for future Town Hall meetings.

“This is a great opportunity for faculty and staff to hear about new initiatives that are being contemplated by our institution to enhance the research enterprise,” Dr. Herman said.
