President Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., welcomed faculty, staff and students to a Town Hall meeting Monday, Aug. 28, to discuss the Health Science Center’s Strategic Plan.
“I think that it is extremely important for us to collectively come together to discuss our plan for the next five years,” Dr. Cigarroa said.
Dr. Cigarroa and Theresa Chiang, Ed.D., vice president for academic administration, presented the plan that focuses on the primary goals of the Health Science Center, which are to:
• educate diverse health care providers and scientists;
• engage in biomedical and clinical research to improve human health;
• provide state-of-the-art clinical care;
• enhance community health awareness and practices; and
• address health disparities.
Dr. Chiang discussed the objectives of each of these goals, emphasizing the importance of them and examining the outcome measures.

“We’re going to hold everyone accountable for what they say they are going to do,” Dr. Chiang said. “If a department commits itself to something, it’s expected to follow through with it.”
The Strategic Plan parallels The University of Texas System’s plans and is in alignment with our Compact, Dr. Cigarroa said. The Compact, which is a part of the Strategic Plan, is a written commitment the Health Science Center made to UT System Chancellor Mark Yudof to provide benchmarks for activity and to document progress in every area.
Audience members had the opportunity to ask Drs. Cigarroa and Chiang questions about the plan, goals, objectives and outcome measures.
“We’re responsible for educating our next generation of health care professionals,” Dr. Cigarroa said. “The Strategic Plan allows us to commit ourselves to reaching the important goals that pertain to the advancement of the Health Science Center.”
