Deadline for employee award nominations is Nov. 1

Please remember to submit your nominations for Presidential Employee Excellence in Service Awards. The nomination deadline is at 5 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 1. All materials must be received in the office of human resources by that time. The nominee can be either a classified or administrative and professional staff member.

Up to five winners will be honored by President Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., Jan. 25, 2007, and given a plaque and a check for $1,000. For information about nominating someone, click on: www.uthscsa.edu/op/employeeexcellence/index.html.

Please use the nomination form to list reasons why you think the person should be considered for an award. A written letter is not necessary to nominate someone. Paper nomination forms are available in the office of human resources, Room 112 of the Administration building. To request that a copy be mailed or faxed to you, please call (210) 567-2320.

Winners will not be chosen based on the number of nominations received. If an employee receives more than one nomination, the selection committee will evaluate the individual based on the first nomination received. If several people want to nominate the same employee, please combine all comments into one nomination form.

For more information, call (210) 567-2320 or send an e-mail to Anita Glass, senior organizational development adviser, at glassa@uthscsa.edu; or Margaret Drake, Ph.D., associate director of human resources, at drake@uthscsa.edu.

Faculty Senate bullets from the September and October meetings

The Faculty Senate met Sept. 13 and Oct. 11, and below are bullets from both meetings. The complete minutes of the meetings, as well as those from previous meetings, can be found at: www.uthscsa.edu/facultygovt/.

Sept. 13

Margaret Brackley, Ph.D., R.N., professor of family nursing and 2005-2006 chair of the Faculty Senate, passed the gavel to the 2006-2007 senate chair, Deborah Baruch-Bienen, M.D., F.A.C.P., associate professor of medicine.

Faculty Leadership Award
Dr. Baruch-Bienen introduced Jan E. Patterson, M.D., professor and interim chair of the department of medicine, as the recipient of the 2006 UTHSCSA Faculty Senate Leadership Award.

Introduction of Faculty Assembly Chairs
Dr. Baruch-Bienen commented on how she would like to renew relationships between the Faculty Senate and each of the schools’ faculty assemblies. Without interfering with the activities or authority of each of the assemblies, there may be important bridges to be built among the various schools concerning institutional issues. Each of the assembly chairs introduced themselves, and described activities that their assemblies may become involved in the upcoming academic year.

Senate Committee Appointments
Dr. Baruch-Bienen lead a discussion concerned about the membership and goals of Senate committees for the 2006-2007 academic year. Topics of interest may be submitted to the Senate Executive Committee by senators or the faculty-at-large. Senate committees will then consider those topics forwarded to them from the Senate Executive Committee.
