The Health Science Center is addressing the nationwide shortage of transplant hepatologists and gastroenterologists by adding another outstanding faculty member to its transplant center team. Juan A. Guerrero, M.D., has been appointed as assistant professor of medicine in the division of gastroenterology and nutrition.

“The ability to see patients who are dying of end-stage liver disease transform into healthy patients with a whole new lease on life is the most rewarding part of my job,” Dr. Guerrero said. “The gratification I feel after seeing that transformation a few times a week is incredibly satisfying.”

Dr. Guerrero is one of only two transplant hepatologists in the transplant center. Physicians in the program perform more than 90 liver transplants per year and are nearing their 1,000th transplant since inception in 1992.

“The multidisciplinary teamwork and the atmosphere are big part of why this program is successful,” Dr. Guerrero said. He also appreciates the influence of accomplished mentors who have contributed to the development of his skills and career.

Dr. Guerrero graduated Phi Beta Kappa and earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the Health Science Center. Following an appointment as assistant professor of medicine in transplant hepatology, Dr. Guerrero was selected for a grastroenterology fellowship. His work has been published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology and he is board certified in internal medicine.

Dr. Guerrero is a member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association, American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the American Medical Association, and is an associate member of the American College of Physicians.

“I look forward to continuing to be part of the team by promoting the growth of the transplant program as well as contributing to the potential development of a specialized liver center,” Dr. Guerrero said.
