Millions of Americans have celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month throughout September and October, and the Health Science Center is no exception. The Medical Hispanic Center of Excellence (MHCOE) hosted a unique presentation Sept. 19 in honor of the Hispanic culture.
The presentation, given by Richard Luduena, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry, suggested the influence various cultural groups had on Spain and how that might play a role in who Hispanics are today.
“Dr. Luduena has tremendous expertise in the area of the history of Hispanics, tracing our heritage to Spain and the migration to the new world,” said Martha Medrano, M.D., director of the MHCOE. “He provided great insight to increase the awareness of our Health Science Center community regarding special topics related to Hispanic and Hispanic health.”
Hispanic Heritage Week/Month is a time of year when Hispanics can reflect on past history, helping define who Hispanics are today. Non-Hispanics have the opportunity to learn more about and appreciate the Hispanic culture.
“Hispanic Heritage Month is especially significant this year because of the issues of immigration that face our state and country,” Dr. Medrano said. “We’re very thankful to Dr. Luduena for his presentation.”
