The Health Science Center will host the Wellness Fair from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, in the breezeway and auditorium foyer. The fair is designed exclusively to educate and evaluate Health Science Center faculty, staff and students, and will cover everything from vital health screenings to massage therapy.
“There is something for everyone at the Wellness Fair,” said Michael Charlton, Ph.D., assistant vice president for risk management and safety. “We’ll have about 50 vendors and education specialists providing tests and expert advice for our campus.”
The Wellness Fair is a collaboration of all five Health Science Center schools, the office of human resources, the office of the president, and environmental health and safety. The graduate nursing school program organized and will run the Wellness Fair, which will encompass a broad range of health issues.
“Participants will have the opportunity to take advantage of free health screenings, including blood pressure, cholesterol, hearing and skin cancer evaluation,” said Jana Porteus, R.N., graduate student. “Awareness is the first step in improving health.”
Flu shots will be offered throughout the day, and a blood drive will be held.
“We’re very glad the entire campus has gotten involved in the Wellness Fair,” Dr. Charlton said. “This unique event is just another way of meeting our Health Science Center goals.”
Some vendors who will be present include the following:
• Weight Watchers
• American Cancer Society
• The San Antonio Food Bank
• Spectrum Health Club
• TexSAn Heart Hospital
• Alzheimer’s Association
• Various department leaders to provide information on dental hygiene, emergency preparedness and deaf education
Many vendors will give away literature and special products.
Some presentations will include the following topics:
• Oral cancer prevention
• Office ergonomics
• Understanding lab tests
• Stress management
• Women and heart disease
"Health promotion awareness is one of the most important challenges in helping people change their lifestyle to move toward an optimal state of health,” said Joseph Tiscani, R.N., B.S.N., graduate student. “Health and wellness fairs like the one sponsored by the president’s office exposes the campus community to a better understanding of learning how to manage health."
