Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., president of the Health Science Center, demonstrates amazing energy every day. But his amazing energy not only affects the campus, it is distributed throughout all of San Antonio and South Texas. That’s why City Public Service (CPS) Energy presented Dr. Cigarroa with the 2006 Amazing Energy Award.
The first Hispanic in the nation to lead an academic health center, Dr. Cigarroa is a nationally renowned pediatric and transplant surgeon who was educated at Yale, Harvard and Johns Hopkins Hospital. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, and has received a certificate in pediatric surgery from the American Board of Surgery. His many professional affiliations include the American Medical Association, Texas Medical Association, Bexar County Medical Society and Aust Surgical Society. In February 2003, he was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve as a member of the President's Committee on the National Medal of Science. Among many organizations, he is a member of the Board of Directors of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and the McNay Art Museum.
CPS Energy representatives said “our community has been fortunate to benefit from the leadership of people who make the most of their talents and demonstrate amazing energy with their everyday accomplishments. It is with pride and appreciation, and in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, that CPS Energy recognizes Dr. Cigarroa – a distinguished physician-educator with amazing energy.”
