Faculty, staff and students – mark your calendars to hear a pioneer who is making new strides in the research of one of the most common forms of cancer. Angela Brodie, Ph.D., breast cancer specialist and professor of pharmacology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, will be the 2006 Presidential Distinguished Lecturer at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, in the central campus auditorium. A reception in the auditorium will follow.

Dr. Brodie’s groundbreaking research led to the discovery of aromatase inhibitors. Her presentation, “Aromatase Inhibitors and Breast Cancer: Concept to Clinic,” will focus on aromatase inhibitors, a new class of breast cancer drugs that now play a major role in the treatment of women with breast cancer.

“I am so honored to welcome Dr. Brodie as our distinguished lecturer,” said Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., Health Science Center president. “Her unprecedented discoveries have saved thousands of lives worldwide.”

Dr. Brodie is internationally renowned for her research in the fields of breast cancer and prostate cancer. Her development of aromatase inhibitors is a major scientific milestone.

During 2006, an estimated 212,920 new cases of invasive breast cancer will occur among American women, and an estimated 40,970 women will die from breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.
