Demand is growing rapidly for workers in the allied health, nursing, dentistry, medical and research professions. It is especially important for young people in South Texas to consider careers in these professions and to serve their home region after graduation and completion of professional training.
To expose young people to the health care professions, the Health Science Center welcomed 1,000 high school and college students, their parents and teachers from throughout South Texas on Nov. 4 to the 2006 Science Expo. Faculty members from departments in the Health Science Center’s School of Allied Health Sciences led the morning sessions, while faculty in the School of Nursing, Dental School, School of Medicine and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences led afternoon sessions.
“I applaud your willingness to spend your weekend preparing for your future,” said Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., president of the Health Science Center, in a message to the visiting students. “Know that we at the UT Health Science Center are here to help you and we hope that one day you will be a student, staff or faculty member helping the next generation of heath care professionals.”
