gutierrezn@uthscsa.edu Thousands of underserved women and children in San Antonio will receive top dental care thanks to a $150,000 fiscal year 2006 grant from the city of San Antonio.
Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., president of the Health Science Center, applauded Mayor Phil Hardberger, members of the City Council and City Manager Sheryl Sculley for their effective leadership in securing funds for the Health Science Center’s Pediatric Dental Care Program at the Ricardo Salinas Clinic located on the city’s far West Side. This is the fourth year in a row the city has funded this program at $150,000.
The program improves access to oral health care for a large segment of the population. Pediatric dentistry faculty and dental residents and students provide evaluations, cleanings, fillings, extractions and oral health counseling for patients. The program also is a one-of-a-kind predoctoral experience that molds and educates dental students.
In 2003, the Health Science Center partnered with the San Antonio Housing Authority, San Antonio Metropolitan Health District and Methodist Healthcare Ministries to establish the program.
