The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, held annually in February, is providing $240,000 in scholarships to medical and nursing students at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio for the 2007 academic year, Health Science Center President Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., announced Nov. 17.

Thirty-nine students in the School of Medicine and School of Nursing will benefit from scholarships from the San Antonio Livestock Exposition (SALE), which operates the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. Dr. Cigarroa honored the SALE Executive Committee and scholarship winners at a luncheon at the Health Science Center. Many of the scholarship recipients are from economically disadvantaged areas of South Texas.

“Providing funding for this scholarship program is one of the many ways we can help our community and region,” said Keith Martin, executive director and chief executive officer of SALE. “Our volunteers work hard to host the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo each year, benefiting the education of our young people.”

President Cigarroa said: “We have selected the most outstanding and deserving students from the medical and nursing schools to receive these generous scholarships. SALE is helping us to achieve our goal of providing homegrown physicians and nurses for the communities and regions of South Texas, where we know more health care providers are needed.”
