Robert L. Wilkins, Ph.D., a nationally respected educator and researcher who has authored several widely used textbooks in his field, became chairman of the department of respiratory care at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio earlier this year.
Dr. Wilkins, a registered respiratory therapist, was recruited to the Health Science Center from Loma Linda University in California, where he had been a faculty member since 1979. He is a Fellow of the American Association for Respiratory Care.
Among his many recognitions, Dr. Wilkins received the CoARC Fred Helmholz Award in 2001 for lifetime contributions to the field of respiratory care education, and he was named a National Honorary Member of the Lambda Beta Society in 2004 for lifetime contributions to the science of respiratory care. He has been named Alumnus of the Year by two universities.
Dr. Wilkins studied respiratory care at the Kettering College of Medical Arts in Kettering, Ohio, and at Loma Linda University, where he received the Bachelor of Science degree in 1978. He completed a Master of Education degree at La Sierra University, Riverside, Calif., in 1986 and finished his Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Southern California in 1996.
