Twenty-five outstanding employees graduated from the Health Science Center’s Leadership, Education and Development (LEAD) Institute this month, making them the inaugural class of this newly created institute.
The LEAD Institute was initiated last spring by President Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., and Vice President and Chief Information Officer Jerry York. The institute was launched in an effort to help some of the Health Science Center’s already strong leaders enhance their abilities.
“This course was a huge success for all who participated,” York said. “We had individuals who represented all five schools and all administrative areas. Many of the participants had different perspectives of leadership and mentoring, so it was great to see these ideas join together to form positive outcomes and relationships.”
Seven sessions took place over an eight-month period. York said the sessions included self-assessment tools that helped participants learn more about their own abilities. A member of the Health Science Center’s Executive Committee opened each session by sharing one of their personal experiences they have with leadership.
“We were all able to learn from each other,” York said. “Several participants had strengths in mentoring and they were able to emphasize the importance of it.”
Each session was held off campus at the Norris Conference Center. “Moving off campus enabled the participants to focus on the learning experience and their fellow participants. It was one of the critical success factors,” York said. He also said he hopes these graduates will form the nucleus of a group of newly trained leaders who will play a pivotal role in continuing to advance the Health Science Center.
“If the individuals we consider leaders today don’t provide the right mentoring or don’t have top-quality leadership skills, we can’t expect younger generations to have these abilities,” York said. “But, during the LEAD Institute we were able to achieve our leadership and mentorship goals, and we intend to continue this institute in the years to come.”
