Each day, our faculty, staff and students make a difference at our institution. Once a year, we all have the opportunity to go beyond our everyday activities and be part of an annual community-based fundraiser – the State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC).

The Health Science Center's 2006 SECC just concluded with outstanding results.
“As campaign chair of the 2006 SECC campaign, I am pleased to report that with the help of 98 departmental coordinators, our faculty and staff have excelled once again,” said Robin Froman, R.N., Ph.D., dean of the School of Nursing. “We are happy to report total pledges of $331,117 with 40.1 percent participation.”

Pledges will help support the needy causes in our community and across Texas.

“Your generosity translates into countless results that strengthen our families, and care for our children, elderly and homeless. You help build the confidence of persons with disabilities and renew the hope of those battling long-term illnesses or the immediate crises of disasters,” Dr. Froman said.

In addition to the departmental coordinators, Dr. Froman extends appreciation to Liz Rendon, manager of information systems; George Lyman, programmer analyst; and Mary Yanes, computer support analyst, for their sustained help with the database support of the E-way system, which allows faculty and staff to view an SECC report: www.uthscsa.edu/Unitedway/SECC2006/index.htm.

“Liz, George and Mary are the constant that have supported the SECC campaign for several years,” Dr. Froman said. “Paul Summers, administrator from the department of acute nursing care, also deserves special recognition, as he was responsible for garnering the support of two of our local merchants who provided participation incentives to those who pledged.” Dr. Froman added that Rudy Gomez, assistant to the dean, provided invaluable support, guidance and good humor to the whole SECC coordinator team. Dr. Froman expresses her sincere gratitude.

“I would be remiss if I did not mention the many special events such as bake sales, taco sales and drawings that included the Special Events Council’s Acadiana Lunch and the special from Papa John’s Pizza that offered 20 percent back to the SECC,” Dr. Froman said.

These fundraisers and other special events helped keep the awareness alive and contributed significantly to the amount raised.

“Again, on behalf of the Health Science Center and the State Employee Charitable Campaign, I want to thank you for being part of a life-changing experience in your own special way. Your gift, no matter how large or small – combined with thousands of other contributors – will make a true impact in the lives of children and families right here in our community. You showed how much the Health Science Center family contributes to the well-being of San Antonio,” Dr. Froman said.
