sansom@uthscsa.edu The Baptist Health Foundation of San Antonio recently awarded two grants totaling $282,500 for a diabetes risk-reduction project and 10 student scholarships at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
The Baptist Health Foundation in November awarded a two-year, $250,000 grant to a team headed by Daniel E. Hale, M.D., professor of pediatrics and chief of the division of pediatric endocrinology and diabetes, for a project titled “Diabetes Risk Reduction via Community-based Telehealth: Project DiRReCT.” Dr. Hale said: “In a pilot project, we assessed Type 2 diabetes risk factors in pre-K and kindergarten children in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. This new grant from the Baptist Health Foundation enables us to enter a new phase – a project utilizing two-way video to work with children and their families in their communities to stop the diabetes and obesity cycle.”
Earlier in the year, the Baptist Health Foundation made available $32,500 for scholarships. The three $5,000 scholarships will assist a medical student, a dental student and a student pursuing a clinical pharmacy career. The seven $2,500 scholarships will assist a physician assistant studies student, three nursing students including one studying for a doctorate in nursing, a physical therapy student, an occupational therapy student and a dental hygiene student.
“These generous awards from the Baptist Health Foundation make a real difference for students who must take out substantial loans to reach their dreams of health careers,” said Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., president of the Health Science Center.
“We are grateful to the Health Science Center for helping the Foundation to accomplish its mission of improving the health of our community,” said W. Frank Elston, FAHP, president and CEO of the Baptist Health Foundation.
