Nursing students at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio will benefit from $50,000 in scholarships provided by the Air Force Nurse Corps Foundation, Robin D. Froman, Ph.D., R.N., dean of the School of Nursing, said Jan. 5.

“This is a generous investment in the education of students who will serve our country in the Air Force as nurses and also in our communities as nurses,” Dr. Froman said.

The Air Force Nurse Corps was recognized as a branch of the U.S. Air Force in 1949. Many Air Force nurses, including clinical nurses, operating room nurses and nurse anesthetists, practice in field hospitals near front lines. Air Force flight nurses provide comprehensive care during airlift flights and air evacuations.

The Foundation, under the direction of retired Brig. Gen. Barbara A. Goodwin, a former chief of the Air Force Nurse Corps, selected the Health Science Center’s School of Nursing for the scholarship distribution in part to honor the school’s longtime commitment to military nursing.

“These scholarships signify the importance of giving to advanced education for our nation’s military nurses,” said Carol A. Reineck, Ph.D., R.N., associate professor in the School of Nursing and occupant of the Amy Shelton and V.H. McNutt Distinguished Professorship in Nursing in Honor of the Nurses of the Armed Forces. “The scholarships send the message that military students’ service to their country is highly valued and rewarded. This gift will acknowledge the military nurses’ potential for even greater contributions to the care of service members past, present and future.”
