Sansom@uthscsa.edu San Antonio (Feb. 6, 2007) – Attorney Stanley Rosenberg and his wife, Sandra, have pledged $500,000 to groundbreaking prostate cancer studies at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, President Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., announced today.
“The Rosenbergs are great friends of the Health Science Center, and they are committed to the work of Dr. Ian Thompson, one of our most outstanding clinician-scientists, as he heads large-scale studies that promise to change the way prostate cancer is diagnosed and treated worldwide,” President Cigarroa said. “We are proud that this generous gift will allow us to establish the Sandra and Stanley Rosenberg Family Laboratories to support the exceptional research of Dr. Thompson and his team.”
Among his many studies reported in major journals, Dr. Thompson and collaborators recently developed a Web-based risk calculator to help men, their families and physicians decide which diagnostic and treatment options are best in each case.
Dr. Thompson is a member of the San Antonio Cancer Institute, a National Cancer Institute Cancer Center that is a partnership of the Health Science Center and the Cancer Therapy and Research Center. He holds endowed chairs at both institutions.
“Sandra and I know how much the Health Science Center has contributed to our community,” Mr. Rosenberg said. “We are honored that our gift can make a difference to such a dedicated scientist who is making world-changing discoveries to advance cancer care right here in San Antonio. Our family is proud to be part of this exceptional physician’s work.”
“The Rosenbergs’ generosity will impact the health of all men in a positive way for generations to come,” Dr. Thompson said. “Through the work of our scientists in the Sandra and Stanley Rosenberg Family Laboratories, we anticipate a future in which prostate cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment will be much more highly refined. Ideally, for those men who are at risk, we will have effective prevention strategies. In those who develop it, we want to detect it early and cure it then.”
Mr. Rosenberg is the senior partner in the Loeffler Tuggey Pauerstein Rosenthal LLP law firm in San Antonio and is the adviser and attorney for the New Orleans Saints’ owner, Tom Benson. A native of San Antonio, Mr. Rosenberg received his baccalaureate and law degrees from The University of Texas at Austin and entered the State Bar of Texas in 1955. A retired U.S. Air Force captain, Mr. Rosenberg is a member of the Health Science Center’s Development Board, along with his wife. Mr. and Mrs. Rosenberg have supported the Health Science Center and its programs for many years. They also support President Cigarroa as members of The President’s Council. The Rosenbergs are active in many other boards and foundations throughout the community.
