The Health Science Center’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee is seeking two community members not affiliated with the Health Science Center to serve on the committee. If you know of someone, such as a neighbor, friend or family member, who might like to serve on this committee, please inform them of this opportunity.
The purpose of the committee is to ensure that animals involved in biomedical research are treated compassionately and humanely. Animal research is an important step in determining the safety and effectiveness of new treatments and therapies that have the potential to save human life.
No experience is necessary, although an interest in science is helpful. The committee meets for two hours one afternoon a month to discuss animal use studies performed at the HSC and affiliated institutions. Committee members are given a packet of information to read before each meeting.
Before serving, community members receive about four hours of training regarding their role and responsibilities. The HSC pays for the member’s gas, parking and other incidental expenses.
