Volunteers are needed for the Alamo Regional Science and Engineering Fair, the office of the Institutional Review Board is holding a series of meetings and the Women’s Faculty Association will meet March 9.

Judges needed for the Alamo Regional Science and Engineering Fair

Volunteers are needed to help with the 50th Alamo Regional Science and Engineering Fair March 15 and 16 at St. Mary’s University’s Bill Greehey Arena. The fair gives more than 430 Bexar County and surrounding area middle and high school students the opportunity to present their own research for evaluation.

Inspecting the projects
Volunteers are needed on Thursday, March 15, to inspect projects to make sure they meet the requirements for display, including the proper dimensions and the safety of the elements on exhibit. Volunteers are needed for one-hour shifts between 1 p.m. to 7 pm.

Judging the projects
On Friday, March 15, volunteers are needed to judge the science projects and interview the students. Breakfast will be served at 7:30 a.m., followed by a briefing and judging. Lunch will be served between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Judging will end at 12:15 p.m.

What’s it like?
Linda Kaufman, a part-time clinical nursing instructor in the department of chronic nursing, has judged at the science fair since 1997. “I do it because it’s fun. I enjoy seeing what the kids are studying,” she said. “I like to see what their hypotheses are and how advanced their thinking is.”

The mother of four has seen the science fair from both sides. “I started judging the fairs when I was teaching full-time at the Health Science Center and saw a notice on the bulletin board. About the same time, my son was starting to do science projects for school and I had so much fun helping him,” she said.

The experience has had a lasting effect on her family. “The activity has led to my son becoming a biochemistry major. He is in the five-year B.S./M.S. degree honor’s program at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and continues to do research,” she said.
