San Antonio (March 6, 2007) — Spencer W. Redding, D.D.S., M.Ed., is the new chairman of the Health Science Center’s department of dental diagnostic science. His elevation from interim chair of the department was announced in February by Kenneth L. Kalkwarf, D.D.S., M.S., dean of the Dental School.

A longtime Dental School faculty member, Dr. Redding is internationally recognized for his research of oral mycoses infection secondary to HIV infection, radiation and/or chemotherapy. Much of his work addresses oral-pharyngeal colonization and infection by Candida species.

In past Health Science Center positions, Dr. Redding served as director of the general practice residency program, was instrumental in the development of the department of hospital dentistry at University Hospital, and was associate dean for advanced education and hospital affairs at the Dental School for 11 years.

Dr. Redding has mentored dental residents and students pursuing careers in dental education. His leadership as a mentor and educator of a new generation of dentists led him to be honored with the American Dental Association Golden Apple Award and the American Association of Hospital Dentists Chasko Award.

Dr. Redding received a Bachelor of Science degree from Davidson College in 1972 and a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 1976. After completing a general practice residency at the Medical College of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia in 1978, he attained a Master of Education degree from the University of New Orleans in 1980.

In 2002, he completed a three-year VA Postdoctoral Fellowship in Dental Research.

He is cross-appointed as a professor in the departments of radiation oncology and general dentistry, and is the director of the Dental School clinical research facility.

“I’ve been here for 24 years, and the Health Science Center has given me a number of excellent opportunities. I consider the chairman’s position to be another,” Dr. Redding said. “My goal for the department is that it is able to grow and continue in a leadership role in oral medicine and oral radiology.”
