Retired Brig. Gen. Daniel Perugini, D.O., has been named associate vice president for research in The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio’s office of the vice president for Research. He will assume his new duties April 1, relieving retired Maj. Gen. Harold Timboe, M.D., M.P.H., who is retiring following a short transition period.

Dr. Perugini will be responsible for the overall supervision of management, coordination and oversight of staff activities. He also will oversee resource support, strategic planning and policy development within the office of the vice president for research.

Before coming to the Health Science Center in December as special assistant to the vice president for research, Dr. Perugini was executive vice president at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, Texas. While there, Dr. Perugini led the strategic planning process and oversaw daily operations of the health science center.

Gen. Perugini retired from the Army in September 2004 as commanding general of the Army Medical Department Center and School at Fort Sam Houston, the largest branch service school with an enrollment at that time of 4,500 students.

From 2000 to 2003, Gen. Perugini commanded Brooke Army Medical Center and the Great Plains Regional Medical Command, the largest regional Army Medical Command, encompassing 16 states and serving one-third of the Army’s combat power. Headquartered in San Antonio, the command included two medical centers, six community hospitals, two ambulatory health centers and 12 outlying clinics in seven states. He supervised 11,000 medical personnel providing health care for 150,000 soldiers and their families.

“We have always had strong ties with military research and education programs,” said Brian Herman, Ph.D., vice president for research at the Health Science Center. “We have benefited significantly from Dr. Timboe being a member of our administration. Dr. Perugini also has had a foot in both the military and civilian worlds. We will benefit from his extensive experience overseeing military medical and educational institutions and his experience in academic administration at the University of North Texas Health Science Center.”
