Have you ever wished you could have a dog but knew you didn’t have time to care for it? If you have, then you’re like Rhonda Falcon, a clinical nursing supervisor in cardiothoracic surgery. She knew her long hours at work wouldn’t be fair to a pet.
But that didn’t stop Falcon from enjoying pets on the weekends, when she has a lot more free time. She volunteers as a pet adoption counselor for the Humane Society/SPCA of Bexar County.
“I’ve been volunteering for about eight months. I help people fill out the paperwork to adopt pets,” she explained. “I also help the Humane Society with adoptions at pet stores and at other adoption events around the city,” she said. “Since September, I have donated 88.75 hours.” And when she’s not helping with the paperwork, she’s petting and playing with the animals.
Falcon is just one of the many Health Science Center employees who are logging their volunteer hours through The University of Texas Service & Civic Participation Program. And if you are not reporting your hours, this is the perfect time to start because it is National Volunteer Week.
U.T. Service & Civic Participation Program
The program, sponsored by The U.T. System for all University of Texas component schools, will honor volunteers who give service hours to non-profit organizations. Those who give the most verifiable hours will be honored at the
< Presidential Awards Ceremony next January.
