The University of Texas Health Science Center School of Nursing, in conjunction with Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC), is offering the “Lebed Method, Focus on Healing,” a gentle exercise program for breast cancer survivors.

The free classes will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. on Thursdays beginning June 7 at CTRC in the Mabee Conference Room, 4th floor.

Promotes physical and emotional recovery
“The Lebed Method, Focus on Healing” aims to help breast cancer survivors recover both physically and emotionally. The program combines sound physical therapy practice with the freeing aspect of graceful movement, incorporating music, positive reinforcement from a group, information and education.

Designed to drain lymphatic fluid
Developed by cancer survivor and professional dancer Sherry Lebed Davis and physician/surgeons Dr. Marc Lebed and Dr. Joel Lebed, the exercises work the whole body, with particular attention to opening the lymphatic drain sites to move and clear stagnant lymphatic fluid, thereby promoting optimum wellness. Exercises will help participants maximize range of motion, gently stretch scar tissue and strengthen the abdominal muscles, legs and overall musculature.

Supported by research
The Lebed method is supported by research published in Physical Therapy, the journal of American Physical Therapy Association, and Cancer Nursing, and is recognized by major cancer and lymphedema organizations around the world. The funding for the classes is provided through a grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure San Antonio.

For more information, contact Barbara Owens, Ph.D., R.N., O.C.N., assistant clinical professor in the School of Nursing’s department of acute nursing at 210-567-5869.
