Shoppers who purchased Macy’s gift cards and Aflac ducks this past holiday season raised more than $19,350 to fund children’s cancer research at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
The funds support the Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute. Health Science Center officials thanked representatives of the two companies May 18 at a campus ceremony.

Philip Canalichio, regional sales coordinator with Aflac, Amy Baenen, regional vice president for Macy’s, and Rick Sandoval, general manager of Macy’s Ingram Park # 217, presented William L. Henrich, M.D., M.A.C.P., and Sharon B. Murphy, M.D., with an oversized check.
Dr. Henrich is dean of the School of Medicine and vice president for medical affairs at the Health Science Center. Dr. Murphy is professor of pediatrics and director of the Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute.
The physicians said they are working toward a lofty goal: a future in which the words “children” and “cancer” will never again appear in the same sentence.
They thanked Macy’s and Aflac for selecting the Health Science Center to be one of the organizations benefiting from this national program.
