John W. Preece, D.D.S., M.S., professor of oral and maxillofacial radiology in the department of dental diagnostic science, swept the 2007 Texas Dental Association (TDA) Photography Contest, winning seven awards including Best of Show, Best Texas Scenic and three first-place awards. The contest was held May 10 -12 at the annual TDA meeting.
Best of ShowDr. Preece’s Best of Show photo, “A Beautiful Place to Land,” featured a water lily from the International Water Lily Collection in San Angelo, Texas. The photo also won second place in the still-life category.
Best Texas Scenic“White Gold, Black Gold,” a photo of a large cotton field with an oil well in the middle, won the Best Texas Scenic as well a first place in the Best Texas Landscape/Cityscape category.
First place awardsDr. Preece won first place for Best Animal Photograph for a white herring with a successful fish catch titled “Dinner is Served.”

He also won first place for Best Texas Photograph for “Dawn’s Early Light,” a picture from Big Bend.
In addition, Dr. Preece won third place in Abstract/Special Effects for a picture of several wood ducks in a shaded pool with reflections titled “The Enchanted Pool.”
The photography contest is held each year in conjunction with the TDA meeting in San Antonio. The contest that is open to any member of the TDA including dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants and dental laboratory technicians. Participants are permitted to enter a maximum of six photographs.
