At it’s August meeting, The University of Texas System Board of Regents approved the naming of an award-winning library at the Regional Academic Health Center in Harlingen for Mario E. Ramirez, M.D. A formal dedication ceremony will be hosted by The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in the future.
The 8,595-square-foot
Mario E. Ramirez, M.D., Library will recognize the former UT regent who also was vice president of South Texas programs at the Health Science Center from 1995 through March 2007. The student library will house many files of historical documents Dr. Ramirez collected during his life that outline his work in helping to build the first hospital in Roma, Texas.
His many accomplishments include practicing medicine for more than 50 years in South Texas, bringing the needs of medically underserved Texans to the attention of several United States presidents and service with a number of statewide and national medical organizations.
“Dr. Ramirez has been a friend to the Health Science Center for a very long time and we are very proud to honor him,” President Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., said. “He has inspired countless students – many who would never have even dreamed of a health care career – to enter the profession. Thanks to him, dreams of a better life through education are coming true for many youngsters, and South Texans also are living healthier lives because of his service to them.”
