SAN ANTONIO (March 3, 2008) — Family physician Carlos Roberto Jaén, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.A.F.P., the Dr. John M. Smith Jr. Professor at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, is a new member-at-large of the board of directors of the Association of Departments of Family Medicine (ADFM).

Association members elected Dr. Jaén, chairman of the UT Health Science Center Department of Family and Community Medicine, to the position at the association’s 2008 winter meeting in San Diego, Calif. His term extends through 2010. Dr. Jaén previously chaired the A.D.F.M. research committee.

The family medicine association brings together more than 135 departments of family medicine nationally, representing more than 2,000 faculty members, 11 million patient visits and an aggregate budget of more than $1 billion. The A.D.F.M. has played a leadership role in academic family medicine and in the renaissance of the discipline. Dr. Jaen’s election reflects the importance the organization places on research devoted to innovation in practices and improving community health.
