Fees for parking permits on all the campuses of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio will increase 4 percent beginning Sept. 1.

The increases are part of a long-term fee increase of 4 percent compounded each year for the next five years. The increase was proposed by the university’s Parking and Traffic Safety Committee in conjunction with the UT Police and Office of the Executive Vice President for Facility Planning and Administration, and approved by the UT System Board of Regents.

The increases will be used to pay the 10-year debt from construction of the two parking garages on the main campus, as well as for increased fuel costs for the shuttle service and the higher cost of materials used to maintain the numerous parking lots and garages on the six campuses.

Ridley Ross, D.D.S., assistant professor in the Department of General Dentistry and chairman of the Parking and Traffic Safety Committee, said, “The state Legislature prohibits the university from using state funds to build parking lots and garages, maintain parking lots or staff the parking office or shuttle services. They look to each university to come up with these funds on its own.

“The committee carefully considered how to make these increases equitable. We all felt that going up 4 percent each year would be fairer to current faculty, staff, residents and students than going up the whole amount in one year,” Dr. Ross said.
