UT police officers are distributing printed copies of the UT Health Science Center’s Emergency Preparedness guide to faculty and staff members who have desk telephones. The guide has important information everyone associated with the UT Health Science Center should know in case of a campus emergency.
The Health Science Center community is also urged to sign up for
HSC Alert, the campus emergency electronic notification system. See information below regarding the registration procedure.
Guide and important handout available onlineThe
Emergency Preparedness guide, along with the UT Police Department’s handout,
“How to Survive an Active Shooter,” are also accessible on the
UT police Web page, for the convenience of faculty, staff and students. All new employees and students will receive printed copies of the handout in their packets.
Keep guide and handout handyFaculty, staff and students are asked to familiarize themselves with the Emergency Preparedness guide and handout and keep them nearby for quick reference. Make them a “favorite” on your computer.
“All of this information is important for your safety,” Police Chief Robert Bratten, the Health Science Center’s director of public safety, said. “One area I want to especially draw your attention to is the ‘Active Shooter’ information. There have been some terrible shootings on college campuses in the past few years. Please read this information thoroughly so that you will know what to do if we ever have a situation like this on our campus.”
Also in the guide is information about how to deal with personal threats, criminal activity, bomb threats, suspicious packages, hazardous materials, fires and natural disasters.
Sign up now for HSC AlertAll those associated with the Health Science Center community are also urged to sign up for
HSC Alert, the university’s emergency electronic notification system, if they have not yet done so.
HSC Alert sends text messages regarding emergency situations and campus closures to e-mail addresses, cell phones and other electronic devices registered through the system.
To sign up for this free service, visit the
portal, log on and follow the instructions. The only charge you will incur is the usual fee your carrier bills for a text message, when you receive an emergency or test message from
HSC Alert. Have all electronic devices, such as cell phones, pagers and PDAs, with you when you enroll, because each device will receive a test message during the registration process.
