Many people at the UT Health Science Center have benefitted from the agencies included in the State Employee Charitable Campaign.
Some of them include:
- Mackenna, the daughter of Jennifer Bernu-Bittle in the Office of External Affairs, who can now use her hand following surgery from the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children
- Cheryl Blalock in the division of geriatrics, gerontology and palliative medicine, who received assistance from the American Red Cross after an apartment fire
- Susan Hallmark, whose sister Amy is among residents at the San Antonio State School who benefit from the additional activities provided through the Volunteer Council of the San Antonio State School
- Patti Ruffin in the Department of Surgery, who suffered from polycystic kidney disease (PKD) until she received a kidney transplant. She received assistance from the PKD Foundation.
- Crystal Smith in the Office of Sponsored Programs, who received help from the Epilepsy Foundation of Central and South Texas, the local affiliate of the Epilepsy Foundation of America, when she was diagnosed with epilepsy

SECC campaign ends Oct. 3The Health Science Center will complete the SECC on Friday, Oct. 3. At this writing, $186,000 — a little less than 50 percent of this year’s goal — has been collected. “Please consider those who truly need your help. If we all work together, we will be able to reach our ambitious goal and help the many people in our community who are in need,” said Graciela Cigarroa, honorary chair of this year’s campaign. The easiest way to give is online by
payroll deduction.
Need information?“If you haven’t received your SECC information or need some assistance, please contact your
departmental coordinator,” Cigarroa said.
SECC fundraisersMany departments are holding fundraisers to add to the campaign. Check the
SECC calendar to see how you can participate.
