SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 28, 2008) — Anesthesiologist Lois L. Bready, M.D., is the 2008 Distinguished Alumnus of the UT Health Science Center San Antonio School of Medicine, the school’s Alumni Association announced.
Dr. Bready, a gifted physician, educator and administrator who completed her medical degree in 1977, exemplifies all that is admirable in academic medicine, her award nominators said.
Among her many accomplishments, she developed a university clinic to counsel patients before surgery and review their records, an approach that has reduced case cancelations and improved patient safety. In addition, she has edited multiple editions of a leading textbook in the field of anesthesiology, the branch of medicine dealing with anesthesia and anesthetics.
Responsible for residency training program Dr. Bready is associate dean for graduate medical education (GME) and is the designated institutional official for GME in the School of Medicine. She also serves as a professor and the vice chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology. In her role as associate dean, she is responsible for the administration of 55 residency programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) that train more than 700 residents in the School of Medicine this academic year.
She will receive the
ACGME’s 2008-2009 Parker J. Palmer Courage to Lead Award next spring.
“Dr. Bready promotes the development of competent, value-based and highly principled physicians who have selected for their most critical years of training the School of Medicine at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio,” said William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP, dean of the School of Medicine and vice president for medical affairs at the Health Science Center. “The Alumni Association made an outstanding choice in honoring her achievements.”
Dr. Bready is also noted for mentoring protégés who have followed her as GME directors.
“At the heart of Dr. Bready’s leadership is her complete devotion to the well-being of the patients and the residents under her care,” said J. Jeffrey Andrews, M.D., R. Brian Smith Endowed Professor and chair of the Department of Anesthesiology. “She views all processes and practices through the prism of continuous quality improvement and patient safety, and she advocates for fair treatment of residents, knowing there is a direct correlation between their well-being and patient care.”
Dr. Bready received her Bachelor of Arts degree in microbiology with honors from The University of Texas at Austin in 1973. Following medical school at the Health Science Center, she completed her internship and residency training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was chief resident in anesthesiology in 1979-80. She joined the Health Science Center faculty in 1980.
