Health Science Center faculty and staff have just a few more weeks to enroll at a discounted rate in the new Spectrum Medical Center Athletic Club being built on campus. Beginning Jan. 1, employees who join Spectrum will pay the same fee as the general public.

“This is a great deal and an opportunity to be the first to use the new club when it opens this spring,” said Ben Rivers, assistant director of Student Life for the Wellness and Recreational Program in Student Services.

Students are automatically members through their student recreation fee, although they need to activate their membership through a Spectrum representative or at their nearest Spectrum.

Discounted rates
The discounted fee is $40 a month for individuals, $75 a month for couples and $110 for families. The UT Health Science Center has arranged to waive the enrollment fee and to discount the processing fee during the early sign-up period.

New facility offers many amenities
When completed in spring 2009, the two-story facility will be open 24/7 and will offer the latest cardiovascular and strength-training equipment, complete with personal viewing screens, as well as free weights, a basketball court, group exercise classes, a sauna and steam room. Other features include luxury locker rooms, a student lounge, full-service café with Internet access and three individual power-napping rooms. An outdoor lap pool will occupy an additional 8,000 square feet. The facility is being built in the outdoor recreation area on the Long Campus.

Those who sign up now can delay the start of their membership until the club opens or choose another Spectrum location to work out until the new club is available, explained Kirk Robinson, membership director for the new club.

How to enroll
Robinson is accepting enrollments between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. every day this week in the Lecture Hall Foyer. He also can meet with employees in his office in Human Resources or by appointment in the employee’s work area.

For more information about club memberships, visit the Spectrum Web site or contact Robinson at (210) 567-2513.
