SAN ANTONIO (March 6, 2008) — A little more than a year after opening its doors, UT Allied Health Therapeutics, a comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation facility, has doubled its space and is now offering pelvic floor physical therapy to help women and men with urinary incontinence and other pelvic rehabilitation issues.

The facility is located on the first floor of the School of Health Professions Building, 8403 Floyd Curl Drive, on the UT Health Science Center San Antonio’s Greehey Academic and Research Campus. Due to construction on Floyd Curl Drive, the Greehey campus can only be accessed from Medical Drive by turning onto Von Scheele.

Variety of rehabilitation services offered
Operated by the School of Health Professions, UT Allied Health Therapeutics provides physician-directed diagnostic, therapeutic and restorative services for patients who have been injured, are recovering from medical procedures, or who have a disabling or debilitating condition.

Services include pulmonary rehabilitation, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech language pathology, social work services, nutritional oversight and physician services, in addition to the new pelvic floor physical therapy services.

Only comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation facility in northwest San Antonio
“We are the only comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation facility in northwest San Antonio,” said David Vines, M.H.S., RRT, director of UT Allied Health Therapeutics, associate professor and interim chair of the Department of Respiratory Therapy. “We have a multidisciplinary clinic, so we all work together closely to create and implement a treatment plan that meets the needs and goals of each patient.

With more than 1,300 square feet, the clinic has five private therapy areas and has added more equipment. “We want our patients to feel as comfortable as possible while they are receiving their therapy,” Vines said.

Holistic approach used for pelvic floor rehabilitation
Tish Rodriguez, a physical therapist, registered massage therapist and administrator for UT Allied Health Therapeutics, provides the pelvic floor therapy. She said, “I take a holistic approach in assessing the cause of the problem before working up a treatment plan. I often receive referrals when surgery or other treatments do not work.”

Rodriguez has 23 years’ experience in physical therapy and is an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Physical Therapy. She helps patients who have had back surgery, spinal injuries, endometriosis, multiple abdominal surgeries, bladder repairs and fertility issues. Among the rehabilitation methods she uses are pelvic floor biofeedback, electrical stimulation treatments to retrain muscles, therapeutic exercise instruction to include stabilization exercises, ultrasound and manual therapy.

“My job is to give women back control of their bodies and increase their awareness of what hasn’t been working for a long time,” Rodriguez said.
