LAREDO (April 8, 2009) — The Laredo Campus Extension of the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio is holding an open house for college students and health professionals to find out how to enter the bachelor’s degree program in Respiratory Care in Laredo.

The open house will be held from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, at the Laredo Campus Extension, 1937 Bustamante Street.

Respiratory Care is a fast-growing, well-paid health profession that is in great demand in South Texas. Respiratory therapists work with people of all ages who have breathing problems. They include people with asthma, emphysema and injuries from car accidents that affect breathing, as well as premature babies with underdeveloped lungs. Jobs are available in hospitals, nursing homes, doctor’s offices and in public health.

“People can live just a few days without water, a few weeks without food, but only a short time without getting enough oxygen into their body,” said Anna Santiago, BSRC, RRT, instructor and coordinator of the Respiratory Care program at the Laredo Campus Extension.

“We offer a bachelor’s degree in respiratory care here in Laredo. You can easily transfer into the program after taking certain college classes from Laredo Community College or TAMIU. We’d love to visit with you about this great educational opportunity.”
