The UT Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Health Professions will soon have a full-time recruiter to encourage students to enter programs through the Laredo Campus Extension (LCE).

Laredo Medical Center announced May 11 its gift of $45,000 to the Health Science Center to fund a full-time recruiter. The recruiter will work to generate interest among local students in pursuing higher education leading to a career in the health professions.

Objective is to eventually employ more local health professionals
“Laredo Medical Center is pleased to partner with the UT Health Science Center in funding a recruitment specialist that will work to bring more qualified, local students into the School of Health Professions,” said Tim Schmidt, CEO of Laredo Medical Center. “There are many potential students in our area, and this new effort towards finding these students will only enhance the allied health care services provided at Laredo Medical Center by employing home-grown, invested health professionals.”

“This gift is truly a blessing,” School of Health Professions Dean Marilyn Harrington said. “We have programs in place and others in mind for our Laredo Campus Extension that will empower Laredo young people and those who wish to change their careers to contribute to society while providing for their families.”

Laredo Campus Extension offers degrees in respiratory care, dietetics/nutrition and physician assistant studies
South Texas students can earn a bachelor’s degree in respiratory care, a combined bachelor’s and master’s degree in dietetics and nutrition, and a master’s degree in physician assistant studies through the Laredo Campus Extension.

Health professionals are essential partners on health care teams, providing critical services that support prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and overall wellness.

The mission of the UT Health Science Center’s Laredo Campus Extension is to educate and train outstanding health professionals to serve the Laredo and Mid Rio Grande Border region.
