HSC receives over $254,000 from San Antonio Area Foundation

The San Antonio Area Foundation has awarded The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio 11 grants totaling $254,323. The funding will be used for nine biomedical research projects, one visual research project and a community and human services project.

The projects include research involving chronic diseases and conditions such as diabetes, cancer, obesity, depression and autism, as well as the establishment of an ophthalmic clinical research center, and funds for transportation and prescription assistance for low-income cancer patients.

“A national leader in biomedical education and research, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio plays a major role in serving the health care needs and challenges in San Antonio and South Texas,” said Reggie Williams, president and CEO of the San Antonio Area Foundation. “The area foundation is honored to partner with many generous donors to help fund the Health Science Center’s groundbreaking medical research, as well as support new best practices for disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment.”

Finding cures for chronic health problems
UT Health Science Center President William L. Henrich, M.D., M.A.C.P., said, “We are grateful to the San Antonio Area Foundation for its continued support of our projects. Cutting-edge research and compassionate care are the critical components in solving today’s chronic health problems for the benefit of future generations.”

The Health Science Center was one of 115 nonprofit groups serving San Antonio and South Texas that received a total of $1.8 million in grant funds from the area foundation, which will fund 132 programs overall.

Since its inception in 1964, the San Antonio Area Foundation has awarded more than $155 million in grants and scholarships. “Thanks to thousands of people who care deeply for San Antonio and South Central Texas, the San Antonio Area Foundation can continue to support worthy causes that enrich lives and build a better community,” Williams noted.
