The State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC) will be conducted from Aug. 31 through Oct. 2. “This year, instead of working towards a particular monetary goal, we are emphasizing participation,” said Mary Henrich, honorary chair of the Health Science Center’s campaign and wife of President William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP. “We hope that everyone will find it possible to give something to the campaign to help those in need.”
Through the campaign, Health Science Center faculty and staff are invited to support their choice of more than 500 agencies and organizations, from local charities to statewide, national and international groups. There are at least three organizations connected to the Health Science Center:
- The Cancer Center Council supports the Cancer Therapy & Research Center at the UT Health Science Center though cancer education, community outreach, fundraising, patient assistance and volunteer services.
- ChildSafe, is the first multidisciplinary agency in Bexar County to advocate for and assist child sexual abuse victims. Medical care, counseling, support groups and many other services are provided. Nancy Kellogg, M.D., professor of pediatrics and chief of the Division of Child Abuse Pediatrics, is medical director.
- Chromosome 18 Registry & Research Society provides education and support for families affected by chromosome 18 abnormalities. The Health Science Center’s Chromosome 18 Clinical Research Center receives funds from this organization, founded by Jannine Cody, Ph.D., associate professor of pediatrics.
Other SECC agencies focus on animals, children, other health issues, family services, religious organizations, schools, social action, international aid and many other causes.
Participation is a team effort“This is a very comprehensive list of organizations and agencies,” Mrs. Henrich said. “I think everyone can find a group they can agree with philosophically and would like to help. And by participating, you might even help a fellow Health Science Center employee who is going through a difficult period. Any donation, large or small, will help us with this team effort to make lives better.”
New 2-ball basketball shooting contestSpeaking of teams, this year’s campaign will offer a new way to raise additional funds for the campaign — a 2-Ball competition. 2-Ball is a basketball shooting contest with two-person teams. Team members alternate shooting the ball from five numbered dots on the court for 60 seconds. Points are awarded for shots made and the team with the highest score wins. The event is planned for Sept. 23 in conjunction with the
grand opening of the Spectrum Medical Center Athletic Club. The event will support the SECC through the $5 team participation fees. Registrations will be accepted through Sept. 18 in
Student Life office.
Special Events Council Acadiana luncheonThe Special Events Council will again offer its annual Acadiana luncheon, featuring selections from Acadiana Café. Funds raised will be donated to the campaign. The luncheon will be held at the Texas Research Park on Sept. 24 and on the Long campus on Sept. 25.
Additional SECC events encouraged“Departments also are encouraged to schedule their own events to raise additional funds for this worthy cause, in addition to the individual donations,” said Mary DeLay 2009 SECC chair.
How to participateDepartmental Coordinators will offer information and instructions on how to participate in the SECC at the start of the campaign.
