Edward Ellis III, D.D.S., a distinguished, international expert in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery, will join the faculty of the Dental School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in April.
Dr. Ellis has been appointed as the chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the Health Science Center’s Dental School. He will oversee educational and clinical care programs that concentrate on the diagnosis and surgical management of oral and maxillofacial disorders, including traumatic injuries, facial bone malformations, pathologic conditions and disorders of the soft and hard tissues of the oral and maxillofacial area. Dr. Ellis will supervise 12 residents and lead a team of approximately 30 faculty and staff members.
“I have always considered the Dental School at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio to be the premier Dental School in the nation,” Dr. Ellis said. “I am looking forward to helping keep it that way.”
World renowned expert in surgery and oral diseasesDr. Ellis is currently professor of surgery and director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. His clinical interests are in maxillofacial traumatology, dentofacial deformities and dental implantology. He has also performed clinical investigations related to the outcomes of patients with facial fractures after treatment by various techniques. Dr. Ellis has edited four textbooks, contributed to more than 40 additional textbooks and has authored 80 abstracts and more than 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts. He has also presented at more than 300 programs and lectures throughout the world.
Kenneth L. Kalkwarf, D.D.S., M.S., dean of the UT Health Science Center Dental School, said Dr. Ellis will help advance the Dental School’s mission.
“Dr. Ellis is a superb surgeon and an accomplished leader. He brings a stellar national and international reputation to the Dental School and the entire Health Science Center,” Dr. Kalkwarf said. “We look forward to him joining our cadre of talented clinicians, researchers and educators focused on taking our Dental School to even higher levels.”
National and international leaderDr. Ellis is an active leader nationally and internationally in his field. He served as president of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and has participated on numerous committees and task force groups within the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the International Association of Dental Research. He was also a consultant to the Commission of Dental Accreditation.
Honors and recognitions Dr. Ellis presently serves on the editorial review boards of six prestigious journals, and is the assistant editor of the
Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He was twice named the recipient of the annual Daniel M. Laskin Award for the best manuscript published in the
Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He was awarded the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon’s Research Recognition Award in 1997 for his research contributions.
His many other honors and designations include the William J. Gies Foundation for the Advancement of Dentistry Award and election to the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Dr. Ellis earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor in 1978 where he also completed his surgery residency and was a member of the faculty of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery prior to joining the faculty at UT Southwestern Medical School in 1988.
