The National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA) has awarded Jane Youngers its 2010 Distinguished Service Award. Youngers is assistant vice president for research and sponsored programs at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio.
The 7,000-member professional society established the Distinguished Service Award in 2001 as a way to recognize council members who have made sustained and distinctive contributions to the organization.
Since joining NCURA in 1975, Youngers has served in many capacities. She serves as a faculty member for NCURA TV and NCURA’s Fundamentals Workshop. She also is a well-known speaker at regional and national meetings. In addition, Youngers has been instrumental in authoring and editing several publications, some produced in collaboration with Atlantic Information Services and the National Assocaition of College and University Business Officers. They include:
- “Regulation and Compliance, A Compendium of Regulations Applicable to Sponsored Programs,”
- “Managing Federal Grants: A Guide for Colleges and Universities,”
- “Managing Federal Grants Newsletters” and
- “Sponsored Research Administration: A Guide to Effective Strategies and Management Practices.”
LeadershipYoungers served as council president in 1989 and has been a member of the national executive committee and the board of directors. In addition, she has served as chair of many conference program committees. In 2002, Youngers was the recipient of the council's Outstanding Achievement in Research Administration Award to recognize her significant contributions to the profession of research administration as well as her noteworthy service to NCURA.
The council’s executive director, Kathleen Larmett noted, “Jane Youngers’ contributions to NCURA are legend. She has served NCURA and the entire profession tirelessly for many years. I congratulate her on this well-deserved and long overdue recognition.”
Youngers will receive her award at the council's 52nd annual meeting during a special recognition ceremony Nov. 1 at the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C.
Other 2010 recipients of the Distinguished Service Award include Denise J. Clark, assistant vice president for research administration and advancement, University of Maryland College Park; Patrick Fitzgerald, associate dean for research administration, Harvard University; and Vivian Holmes, assistant director, Broad Institute of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard.
