Feeling safe while working or earning your degree at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio is something most of us take for granted. However, there could be times when you feel concerned, uncomfortable or perhaps even threatened by the behavior of others.

To address these concerns, the UT Health Science Center San Antonio’s Behavior Intervention Team recently developed the CARE (Campus Awareness Requires Everyone) website, http://care.uthscsa.edu.

A shared responsibility
The website provides training and resources that help you take action in preventing campus violence and reacting to dangerous situations.

“We have been fortunate that we have had no major violence on our campus, like some campuses have,” said Kozue Shibazaki, Ph.D., chair of the Behavior Intervention Team and interim director of the Student Counseling Service.

“We have an open campus, which means that anyone can walk through here. However, violence often results from common, everyday stresses, such as failing grades and problem marriages. The key is that we all share a responsibility for helping to keep our campus safe,” she said.

Useful resources
“While we often feel uncomfortable becoming involved in someone else’s problems, just having someone to talk to can help. The Health Science Center has a number of counseling resources to help people deal with stressful situations, such as financial concerns, marriage problems and issues with grades or children,” Dr. Shibazaki said.

“The CARE website has information on how to get counseling, as well as important phone numbers, warning signs, tips on how to react to a violent situation and an excellent training video that could save your life,” she continued.

There are also instructions on how to sign up for HSC Alert, the university’s communication system that sends text messages and e-mails to those enrolled during emergency situations and campus closures.

The CARE website also is available from the university’s website by clicking on the Campus Status page link.
