Faculty and staff members of the UT Health Science Center San Antonio now have a new way to help makes lives better — by volunteering as mentors in the
American Corporate Partners program.
The national program matches mentors from leading corporations and institutions of higher learning with military veterans who have served on active duty since 2001.
Corporations and institutions participating in the program include other University of Texas System institutions, Harvard University, The University of Oklahoma, Procter & Gamble, Campbell Soup Company and The Home Depot Inc.
Mentoring involves working with an armed forces service member, or the spouse of a service member severely wounded or killed in action, for one year. The activities include communicating regularly with the protégé, sharing some time together, coaching them regarding their job search, helping them set up an action plan and assisting them in finding shadowing opportunities in careers of interest.
Mentors working with protégés who live within 100 miles of San Antonio will meet with their protégés in person on a monthly basis. Those with protégés who live farther away will have monthly contact by phone or e-mail.
Mentors and protégés are matched by ACP staff members who take into account the protégé’s career interests and the preferences of protégés and mentors. ACP staff members will be in touch regularly to track the progress of the relationship. The ACP website offers suggestions on how to be a successful mentor.
