The UT Health Science Center San Antonio has a new way to learn about diversity and incorporate it into campus life — the Multicultural Calendar.
“In understanding the rich heritage, beliefs and practices of our Health Science Center community, San Antonio and our region, it is increasingly important that we strive to ensure that we are inclusive and culturally proficient in all of our activities and interactions,” said William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP.
Diversity of the Alamo CitySan Antonio’s richly diverse culture goes beyond the peoples native to this region and the collage of immigrants that settled early Texas.
For example, San Antonio has welcomed service members from around the world for military training for nearly a century. Now, thousands more U.S. military members with diverse backgrounds will receive health care education in San Antonio through the Department of Defense’s Medical Education & Training Campus.
Just a few miles from the Health Science Center campus, refugees from war-torn countries are being resettled, with some receiving care from Health Science Center faculty and students.
And, as the leader of the biosciences industry in South Texas, the Health Science Center has welcomed to the campus brilliant faculty members and enlightened students from all over the world to study, conduct groundbreaking research and offer the best in patient care, leadership and service.
“I am pleased that we have this new multicultural calendar and diversity resource that will help us better understand the customs, beliefs and holidays of our colleagues, classmates and patients,” President Henrich said.
“I encourage you to use this resource as a handy reference when planning campus events, clinical activities and class schedules, including exams,” President Henrich continued. “By using this new diversity tool and bringing it into our daily lives through classroom assignments and discussions, we will be sharing a broader understanding and appreciation of the wonderfully diverse world we share. Building a stronger, more inclusive community will help make lives better."
