SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 12, 2010) — “How to understand your PSA test results” is the first in a series of free public presentations on cancer provided by the Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC) at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio.

CTRC Executive Director Ian M. Thompson, Jr., M.D., will speak in simple terms about the latest in prostate cancer prevention and treatment in the inaugural session, to be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 2. He will speak at the Cancer Therapy & Research Center, 7979 Wurzbach Road, in the Mabee Conference Room, located on the fourth floor of the Grossman Building,

PSA tests have increased the ability to detect prostate cancer in men, but Dr. Thompson’s nationally recognized research has shown that patients and physicians cannot depend on those results alone to evaluate risk and treatment. Dr. Thompson will talk about how to put PSA results in perspective with age and other risk factors.

Each month, a member of the cancer center will lead a talk designed to explain cutting-edge research in a specific area of cancer to the general public. In January, Peter Ravdin, M.D. Ph.D., director of the CTRC’s Breast Health Clinic, will speak on breast cancer.
