“Those who attend will gain insight into the latest recommendations on developing a team-based approach to sports medicine,” said Jesse DeLee, M.D., course director and clinical professor of orthopaedics in the UT Health Science Center’s School of Medicine. “They will learn to diagnose common injuries, initiate primary treatment after an injury, advise athletes on treatment, and prevent injuries using conditioning and protective equipment.”

Some of the topics
In lectures, panels and discussions, the symposium will cover general sports medicine; head, neck and spinal column; shoulder and upper extremity; the leg, foot and ankle; the knee; and rehabilitation. Special workshops will delve into cutting-edge topics including “AED and Sudden Death in Athletes,” “Challenges in Rehabilitation,” “The Female Athlete,” “Sports Medicine Case Conference” and an anatomy dissection that will focus on the knee, foot and ankle. Participants are encouraged to bring their own cases for discussion during question-and-answer session.

The annual Symposium on Sports Medicine began as a combined effort of the Department of Athletics at UT Austin and the Department of Orthopaedics at the UT Health Science Center. The first meeting, held in 1972, was at the forefront of sports medicine education for physicians and athletic trainers. The symposium continues to serve all professions today, providing educational presentations for all members of the athletic medicine team.

Fees
The preregistration fee is $240 for physicians and $140 for all other participants. Preregistration ends Dec. 14. To register, visit http://cme.uthscsa.edu or contact Joe Cepeda at 210-567-4446.
